Florida Criminal Defense Attorney

Q.I lived in florida for several years while still having a tennessee drivers license. I recieved 3 tickets which i never went to court for and was tried in my absence. I have since moved yet again to Virginia. I was trying to get my Va. license and had a letter from Tennessee saying my license was not suspended or under revocation. I was refused my Va. license because of some blemish on my license through the national registry they check under these situations. They quoted me a total for all 3 tickets that came to 598.00 dollars total. i paid them via a money order and several days later recieved 3 stubs of "compliance with court requirements for a traffic violation or infraction". The only wierd thing, and what prompts me to write this is the letter from the sherrif office in the same small florida town that followed 2 days later. It was a letter titled "Cash Appearence Bond". It listed the money I just paid for the 3 tickets and had a court date set for early March!! It mentioned that the money I sent was "security for the appearence of the defendant upon the conditions hereinafter set forth . It was then followed up by this after I appear for the 3 charges "...and shall appear in said court from day to day and term to term and shall not depart the same without leave, said money so deposited shall be returned to the undersigned depositor, else to be forfeited or estreated by order of the above court". what does this mean? Do I still have to drive from Virginia to Florida to answer for these violations? What the heck was the large amount of these fines for? Can I let them keep the money and simply wash my hands of this?

A.Sounds as if the court issued arrest warrants for you when you didn't show up for court. You need to speak with a Florida criminal defense attorney to see what your options are. I got my Virginia license today. I called first to florida and found that the money in fact is a bond that is held until I am tried in court on march 2. I will be found guilty, and the money will apply to the offenses. If I chose to show up, and by some miracle win, I would get the money back. Since i have no intention of going down there, It was easy to accept the guilty verdict and pay the money they already have from me. I will follow up on march 3 to verify things are still ok. It may result in a quick suspension, and i pay another 30 dollars to virginia to reinstate it. I dont care about a mere 30.00 after 5 years of this lingering on my license. As long as im holding my license, I dont care. Florida told me they entered a "V6" entry in the national computer. This is the thing that was hindering me in the first place. Although Tennessee did not go by it, and they held my license, Virginia did honour it.
