Q.My friend is a veterant. He is living in Texas now. Recently, he faces some troubles and very in need of a lawyer. So where can I find a Pro Bono lawyer in or around caldwell texas or brian texas area? Can anyone of you give me some advice???
A.You don't say if the matter is criminal or civil. If it is criminal, and he needs a defense atty, he can get a public defender. He should have been informed of this by the court. If you are looking for a private pro bono atty on a civil matter, there are several places to start looking. Look for a local legal aid society. Then try contacting the State Bar, or the County Bar, associations. They usually have programs to put people in touch with potential lawyers. If there is a law school in the area, you can often get very good representation by law students overseen by practising lawyers, who do this regularly. If it is a civil liberties issue, contact the ACLU. But you should know the odds aren't good. Lots of people look for free lawyers, and most lawyers prefer to be paid. If the vet is looking to sue someone, it may be possible to find a lawyer not on a pro bono basis, but for a contingency fee, which would mean you'd pay nothing except a (healthy) portion of any recovery made in the lawsuit.
