Find A Tax Lawyer
Q.I have to face to some trouble now. So i need a tax lawyer as soon as possible. But how do I find out if an income tax lawyer. And is any good before handing over a chunk of money? Can anyone of you give me some advice???
A.Ask him/her for credentials; does s/he have an LLM in taxation? If the matter involves litigation, has s/he handled similar cases in the past? How long has s/he been in practice? Prior IRS experience can be valuable if the matter involves negotiation with the Service; the more recent the better, in that case. Does s/he have any current or former clients who will recommend him/her? (S/he can't give you their names without their consent.) Call the local bar association to see whether they have a public file of complaints against lawyers and, if so, whether any have been made against him/her. Find a friend who has retained a lawyer for similar purposes in the past. Call the tax professor (not the dean's office) at the nearest law school.
