Q.For traffic tickets in court district 2 hrs away, is it better to use a lawyer in the local county? I have a court appearance for a CA 22348b ticket (over 100mph). I plan to use an attorney and want to know is it better to use one that is local to that court or to retain one that is from out-of-town. I live 2 hrs away from the county where this was cited.
A.You have several interests at stake here. First, you want an attorney familiar with defending this kind of speed charge, particularly if your goal is to succeed at trial. You may not find such an attorney in the county where this occurred. Second, you want an attorney familiar with the court and the personnel involved, particularly if you want to negotiate a settlement. Such an attorney may not have speeding ticket expertise. Third, you do not want to pay more than you need to. Your goal here is to avoid the expenses involved in a conviction, including fines and insurance costs, and to avoid a license suspension. But it doesn't do you any good if the lawyer costs more than the expense of all that put together. As has been noted, you probably don't want the added cost of paying for an attorney's commuting time. Only you can balance out these various factors to help decide what is best for you (but if you can find a well-respected local attorney with the expertise you want, you are in good shape).
