Find A Lawyer Los Angeles
Q.I am looking for an attorney in Los Angeles for a civil rights case (vs LAPD, LA Sheriff's office, and a large corp.) for events which happened last week when I was there. But I'm in another state and don't know how to find attorneys who specialize in this, and get opinions from people about them. Anyone have any experience with such an attorney in LA ?
A.Call the bar association referral service on the phone, get the number of an attorney who has signed up with that service in the field you need, then call that attorney and interview that person. If you like what you hear, you can retain that person, if not, you can call the referral service again, and ask for a different number. The problem with finding a lawyer is that individual civil rights is not really a "specialty" or "field" of law practice. You have to understand that suing police on a contingent fee basis is not one of those things that a lawyer can make a regular living at. What you will find is a general or personal injury lawyer who, by circumstance, has successfully prosecuted one or two of these cases. But the fact is that these cases are highly technical, very expensive, and all too frequently unsuccessful. If you have a highly unusual and compelling case, a "bankable" case, many good lawyers will consider taking the case and investing the time/money to develop it. But no specialist can make it a good case. So throw a dart at the phone book and start talking to lawyers.
