Find A Lawyer In PennsylvaniaQ.I need to find a Pro-bono lawyer in in Reading, Pennsylvania.? My friend was recently involved in a car accident and fled the scene because she was afraid. The car was parked and there was no one in the vehicle. No one was hurt. There were people chasing her and the cops caught up to her. The police are charging her with DUI and fleeing the scene. This has never happened to her before, this is her first attempt. She is really scared and has been looking for a lawyer. Public defender or a pro-bono lawyer. She is married and was told that they would look at her husband’s income to determine if she qualifies but he will not help her with any fees. She is not working and has three kids. She is basically on her own. She is really ashamed of what happened and knows that she is guilty. But she is afraid for her kids and does not want to go to prison. Any advice ??? A.I congratulate you and your friend for her deciding that she needs a lawyer. That's a smart decision. However, pleading guilty without talking to a lawyer would be an incredibly dumb decision. There may be a number of reasons it isn't necessary to plead guilty, and only an attorney licensed in Pennsylvania can assist her. The public defender is generaly appointed for someone whose family resources can't afford an attorney, so they will probably consider her husband's income. If he won't assist her and/or won't help her to hire an attorney, then apparently he's not aware of what will happen if she pleads without one.. i.e. license revocation, (she can't drive the kids places.. HE has to do that), she can't go grocery shopping (HE has to do that), etc. Its incredibly selfish of him and he's not doing her any favors. IMHO, she needs more than just a criminal defense attorney, she needs a divorce attorney as well, sounds like hubby is a control freak. Most lawyers will require a retainer of some type and then will accept payments. Contact the local or state bar association for some referrals.
