Q.My father, who lives in Boise, Idaho, is being divorced by my stepmother. She has retained a lawyer (Stan Welsh) who specializes in divorces, and is a partner at a large law firm. My father is going with a sort of general purpose lawyer from a smaller town in the vicinity. I believe that there is a legal mismatch, and would like to find a lawyer who specializes in divorce, and has gone up against big guns before. While I usually believe that I can find out anything on the Internet (or through using research databases at my university), I have had a hard time with this. Can anyone point me to either a FAQ about how to find a good divorce lawyer, or make a recommendation of a lawyer.
A.I also have a couple friends in different states who are very, very sharp attornies who have actually helped a woman in another state successfully go up against her husband's attorney pro se and win. If you would like to shoot me an email, I might be able to put you in contact with one or both of them. I'm not sure if they are licensed to practice in Idaho, but they do travel to different states sometimes and either help other attornies or take cases in different states. They are both Christian attornies very strongly and personally opposed to the injustices of the way divorce is practiced in the United States today. They pose very tough questions and are highly motivated to make ground breaking cases out of each trial or hearing where many divorce attornies realize that their income is threatened when divorce rates drop. Furthermore, I believe most judges come from a society of divorce attornies, so courts are generally somewhat predisposed to favor the person filing for divorce, or at least it seems that way, partly due to the no-fault divorce legislation, partly due to pressure put on judges to comply with it, and partly due to the fact that it is lucrative and not career threatening to do so. So, you're father is in a tough place and needs an attorney who will, in truth, represent him and not merely charge him to represent the interests of the society of divorce attornies.
