Find A Good Lawyer
Q.How do you find out if a lawyer is a good lawyer? How do you find out how many cases he/she has won/lost? We are trying to hire a criminal lawyer in California and we need to know how to find out if a lawyer is good or not. I would like to know of any websites that tell of lawyers court history - how many cases have been won, how many cases have been lost and how many years of trial expierence Can anyone give me suggestion???
A.The California Bar Association has a website that can tell you whether or not the person has any problems, such as suspension of his license or censure. But court history is not gathered in any simple way. The court's web site only lists cases currently pending, and not those already over, whether won or lost. (Criminal case histories, when available, are listed by defendant's name, not the attorney's.) Martindale Hubble (sp?) is a listing of lawyers and law firms, and can give you general information concerning where the attorney went to law school, how long he has been in practice, his areas of specialization, etc. For more specifics, I would recommend asking the local lawyer referral service. If you have time, you could research the lawyer's name in the archives of the local newspaper, and read about cases that were important enough to be reported. If your local paper has an on-line edition, this should not take too much time. Don't neglect the lawyer's own yellow pages ad and web site. Certainly these are self-serving, but they will give you insight as to how he presents himself; areas of specialization, possible target clients, etc. For example, some criminal defense attorneys specialize in certain types of cases (DUI or drug cases, for example), and will know the current law in those areas best.
