Find A Good Divorce Lawyer
Q.How does a person find a good divorce lawyer? I would like one that comes well recommended, but have no one that I know that can provide a personal recommendation. I want to make sure that I have one with a good reputation & that will get things done right & professionally & that gets things done- I don't want this dragging out forever. Looking in the yellow pages, there are SO many. I've heard divorce lawyer horror stories & don't know where to start.
A.Research, Research, Research -- check with your local bar association, they will give you several. Check out their website (if they've got one); check with the local Better Business Bureau, then call them - ask questions. Once you've narrowed it down to 3 or 4 then go see them -- there's nothing like a face-to-face meeting to get a feel for a person. Ask more questions - let them know up front what you think your ex might be planning and find out how they would deal with it to get the results you want. Talk to your friends who are divorced. If they lost everything to their ex, then go with the ex's attorney! If they got the majority of things, then stick with their attorney. Divorce will only get dragged out when the two parties start getting stupid. Try to keep things as civil as possible considering the circumstances and hope your husband/wife will do the same. The best thing to do is to check a prospective lawyers track record. You can go on line to your local bar association and check the credentials of any divorce lawyer. Go for one that ONLY handles family matters! Don't go to an all-purpose attorney. Once you've contacted one, don't be afraid to ask key questions directly, such as the duration, cost, conditions, possible adversities and anything else you want to know. Get second and third opinions before deciding on one.
