Find A Cheap LawyerQ.Cheap lawyer vs. expensive one. Does it really matter which one you choose? Today I had a consultation with a family law attorney regarding the horrible things that have been done to me and my family over the past 3 years such as putting my little girl in a marajuana user's home, on a street with 8 pedifile neighbors, going to a daycare where she constantly gets sick and hurt, and termination of her child support just to name a few. I could not afford a lawyer at past hearings and did not have the money to keep appealing the orders. I also just recently had to go bankrupt because every penny I make goes to only the necessities of the household and my children. The lawyer said it would cost me $10,000.00 to get my daughter out of that horrible place and back where she belongs here with me and her brother. What would you do? Would you take out a home equity loan if you could and pay her the $10k, or would you look for a cheaper lawyer who could go through the same proceedures for you as she would? We're talking house inspections, mental health tests etc... A.Personally, I would do whatever it took to gain custody of my daughter-including a home equity loan. An expensive attorney is not necessarily better than a cheap attorney. An expensive attorney has probably earned himself a reputation based upon the settlements he has reached and, therefore, feels he can charge more because people will perceive him to be more effective because of the big "wins". There are expensive attorneys who are good and expensive attorneys who are just average and not worth their hourly rate. I would recommend that you meet with 2 or 3 different attorneys to see who you feel more comfortable with. That will make a huge difference. Also, keep in mind....is the office organized; is the staff friendly; is the attorney on time; is the attorney preoccupied. No attorney can guarantee you anything-keep that in mind. You could check with the bar association (they license attorneys) for the state you live in to see if a particular attorney you are interested in has ever had any discipline action taken by them. If so, probably not a good choice. You could, and should, go to court on a day that a divorce trial is going on and sit in on it and watch the attorneys in action. Most court hearings are open to the public. You can find out when court is in session by calling the Family Court in your area. In the meantime, be sure that you are being a good parent to your son; don't be out partying; don't be using drugs; don't be bringing strange men into your home; don't have parties at your house; don't associate with criminals or drug users. Be sure to have as much contact with your daughter as you can (and keep a record of the dates). The negative can be used against you.
