Family Lawyers

Q.I have a question regarding lawyers and what types of cases they are able to either accept or decline. While I was thinking about the types of people they may defend, this list may very well include murderers, rapists, and god knows what else. If and when you lose such a case, it is very possible that this person will blame you for putting them in jail and hold a grudge, etc. Is it that uncommon for someone to come back possibly for revenage on their attorney? While I know this "danger" if you'll call it, is inevitable, are there ways to bypass these types of cases? My interest is in business and civil related matters, but not criminal cases like these. If I join a firm, large or small, will I have a right to accept or decline which cases I work on? I know I wouldnt actually be a counsel for many years, but eventually, would I have this choice? Does this bother any lawyers who know their defendant will be out in 10 years? Do some literally do what I am asking about?

A.I think there's some truth to the adage that in criminal law you work with bad people on their best behavior and in family law you work with good people on their worst behavior. I haven't been practicing nearly as long as you have, but I only had to do a little family law before I realized that some of the people you represent in contentious family litigation act just plain loopy. And that goes for some family lawyers and judges, too. Now a large part of my practice is criminal appellate so most of my clients are in jail and, despite my best efforts, will likely be there a long time (I practice in TX where many judges essentially write their opinions with a rubber stamp marked "AFFIRMED"). I've heard of one excellent appellate lawyer whose neo-nazi client was unhappy with the result of his appeal and whose friends harrassed the lawyer till he moved. But other than that, my limited experience is that most criminal law clients are pretty cooperative. Knock on wood.
