Family Law Outline

Q.I have used legal software in the past for basic stuff like leases, power of attorney, and sales and was very impressed with the ease, convenience and inexpensiveness of using them... I now find myself in a situation where I want to find some software that would give me the basic outline for parenting agreements concerning visitation and custody type questions... I find that those sort of arrangements are good to have spelled out in black and white and yet hesitate to spend the $140/hour that I was recently quoted by an attorney for his services... Especially since those situations can change so often... The software that I have has nothing related to family law type stuff and I am wondering whether anyone knows of any consumer type legal software that does (preferably under $50)...

A.I understand your desire to save a few bucks (our biggest motive here at MCFL), HOWEVER... Unless you ARE a trained family law attorney, leave issues such as custody, etc. to those who are trained. Even an attorney who doesn't practice family law will go to one who does. Reason being is that you're not going to see ALL the issues. Family law attornys tend to see the same issues rising time and time again, and they know how to look down the road. And, while you might draft a document, you may forget some areas which become loopholes and later become material issues. At that point, you won't have any choice but to spend some serious money (certainly more than $140) to go to court. Further, the "do-it-yourself lawbooks," have been looked at with askance by the courts. Likewise the software packages. In some states, they're illegal. The authors are technically committing UPL (Unauthorized Practice of Law), which is a chargeable offense. (It's essentially "impersonating" an attorney.) Therefore, they tend to have "disclaimers" shifting the liability to the user. If you screw up, there's no recourse with them. However, if an attorney gives you bad advice, they carry malpractice insurance. So, my suggestion is to pay the attorney now and save bigger bucks later.
