Q.Would anyone here happen to know if measurement of reaction time can be used as a semi-reliable measure of intoxication if calibrated for a particular individual? I am interested in the reasonable options for an electronic automotive kill switch. There are some fairly inexpensive breath analyzers but I would guess they would be easy to fool and difficult to integrate. A reaction time measurement could be very straightforward???
A.A basic principle of measurement is to measure the thing you care about, if at all possible. In this case, you don't care about response time, nor about driving ability, nor about whether you are drunk; you care about whether a cop will decide you are drunk. And the tool the cop uses to decide that is a breathalyzer. So, get a handheld breathalyzer. They're easily available. (The cop may also use various informal drunk-tests, like getting you to walk a line, or track his finger movements with your eyes. There is a DUI-defense lawyer in San Diego who posts a large ad in the paper every year near the Holidays advising people what to do when pulled over on suspicion of DUI. One thing I remember from the ad is his advice not to participate in any "field-sobriety" tests, such as walking a line or reciting the alphabet backward. I believe his point is that by the time the officer asks you to perform, he is already convinced and is just building up evidence, so why help him - you are going to jail anyway.
