Divorce Without A Lawyer
Q.2 1/2 years ago, the newsgroup about marriage-based visas helped my now-husband and I to complete all the red-tape for him to come to the US from Europe so we could get married, without using a lawyer. Last week he told me that he can't adapt to living in the US and re. our marriage, "It's time to 'move on.'" .. after 19 years of waiting for "the right guy" after my divorce.... Anyway, emotions aside, I'll be left with a large house payment, so won't have much money to live on. Apparently he doesn't plan to do anything necessary to get a divorce, he's just going to leave. He won't discuss anything, either. If possible, I would like to handle this without a lawyer, to save money. The only piece of property involved is the house, which he is willing to sign a quit-claim on, since almost all the equity is mine, having sold my other home last fall and used all the money as a large down-payment. There are no kids, so it should be quite straight-forward. We live in Minnesota. Has anyone on this newsgroup gotten a divorce without a lawyer? Where does one start?
A.I guess it all depends on the state you live in. My good friend (who is helping me with my soon to be divorce) got her divorce without a lawyer. She did it all herself. You just need to have the right forms and get the filed etc. If there is going to be no contention or arguing over terms.. I think it's pretty straight forward and just requires signing some avadavits etc. Again, this is all dependant on how amiable the divorce and the state you live in.
