Divorce Lawyers In New Jersey
Q.I am 15 years old, turning 16 in 3 months, and I live in New Jersey. I live with my mother who is divorced, and is an unfit parent. I'm not just another kid who resents their parent over power struggles and being grounded. My mother deprives me of basic material needs, such as clothing, and when she's angry at me she refuses to feed me. I want to say that my mother is verbally abusive as well, but that doesn't even begin to cover it. DYFS has been to my house before, and no actions were taken. I know that I'm young, but I still feel like I'd be able to support myself on my own. My mother doesn't support me and will not allow me to get a job to pay for my own needs, so I feel like I'm going to be stuck for the next 2 years in a truely broken home. What are the laws in New Jersey for emancipation? What evidence would I need to prove that I am better off by myself? How do I go about finding a lawyer? Does my situation sound like I need to be emancipated?
A.emancipation is not available in every state, and New Jerssy is one of them. I have been in your situation and I know it sucks.Except I was able to take it upon myself and go work to eat and keep the lights on.I have been working since I was 14 and had to drop out of high school. There is no statute concerning emancipation inNew Jersey.The only way the parent child relationship can be terminated is by an "agency" such as the dept. of family services you mentioned.Then you would go into thier costody which,trust me,you don't want.The only thing that can be done is a judge ordering her to do certain things for you,and then your life at home would probably become worse.
