Divorce Lawyer Pro Bono

Q.Is anyone here very familiar with child custody laws? I have gone to Nolo.com, but their advice (when the server is working) is very limited. Child custody law is State law so it varies from State to State. More importantly, how it's administered depends on your State and the judge. What is making you afraid? Do you think you've done something that may cost you custody?

A.It seems to me that the more afraid you are, the more you should try to talk to your lawyer even though it may cost you. Sometimes you have to spend the money. I'm assuming that your lawyer is a divorce lawyer. If so, she'll know what the custody law is and how it is likely to be enforced. I'll bet you that the problem isn't as bad as you think and that she could put your mind at rest. I'd also recommend that you look into any services for women in your area and see if they have access to legal help. If you can't afford your own attorney, a women's shelter or such might be able to connect you to lawyers who do pro bono work. You could also call the local bar association and ask about pro bono services. The local public defender's office might also be able to refer you to someone.
