Divorce Lawyer Chicago
Q.I recently talked to a woman who was trying to save her marriage. Some months before she had gone to a lawyer to explain her situation and the lawyer warned her of the danger of her situation. The lawyer said that on failing to file a divorce petition, her husband would take everything and the woman would be left penniless. She took the bait, to her later regret. Now I cannot say the lawyer seduced the woman, nor did he entice her. What word describes the action of the lawyer in getting a wife to turn against her husband in this way?
A.What the lawyer did was to persuade the wife to start divorce proceedings. He gave her advice and she took it. You may even say that he enticed her with the suggestion that by following his advice she would be better off. But I get the impression that you are trying to impart a sense of disapproval to the word. I don't think you are going to find a single word. How about "persuade against her best interests"? For more than thirty years my wife has practiced what her colleagues are pleased to call "family law" (I still think of her as a divorce lawyer), and a bit has rubbed off on me. Despite the ambiguities in your most recent posting, I suspect David has winkled out what you were trying to say -- that a divorce lawyer advised a wife to initiate divorce proceedings before her husband cleaned out the bank accounts and made off with the jewelry. For all we know, the husband was faking an attempt at reconciliation to give himself time to clean out the assets. Or is this one of those "My friend" cases where you are the husband and you blame the lawyer. Don't blame the lawyer. What he told the wife is true in the overwhelming majority of cases. The longer someone waits to file, the easier it is for the other spouse to empty the larder, and the harder it becomes to get anything back. If my guesses are correct, I suppose the term you want is "lawyer."
