Divorce Attorney Chicago

Q.A co-worker of mine, a really nice guy who's been at my job a few years, got hit with surprise divorce papers a few months ago. There was a restraining order involved and blocked visitation of their young daughter. My gut told me he couldn't be guilty of any kind of violence or of abuse of the child. Everyone at work felt really bad for him and I really wanted to help him. Many years ago, my sister went through a really nasty divorce, w/ the husband violating court orders and taking the kids out of state illegally, etc. She found this atty. through a women's advocacy group and this lawyer was fabulous...she took her case at a reduced retainer and went to work for her right away; she got emergency hearings and got a lot of stuff straightened out quickly. My sister got her kids back and she ended up with a pretty good settlement (neither of them had much money, but she got the custody arrangement she wanted and property division she felt was fair), so she felt good about recommending this lawyer to other people over the years. The atty. is a woman and mainly represents female clients, but occasionally she takes male clients, as long as they aren't accused of domestic violence. Does anyone out there know of a good family law/divorce atty. in the Chicago area willing to represent a deserving father who is getting screwed over by the legal system and getting his rights trampled on, and willing to adjust his/her fee for a good cause?

A.What good cause? This isn't a good cause, this is just a normal divorce case. The fact that the client is blameless doesn't convert him into a charity. There is no reason in these facts for a divorce attorney to reduce fees or reduce a retainer. Divorce attorneys don't succeed if they take a personal interest in the rightness of the client's side. The successful ones have the attitude that they are paid to work the system. Some are better than others, true. Some are lazy or burned out. But maybe you wouldn't have a negative opinion about this present attorney if you understand that she is being paid to work the system, not be a champion of a good cause. You friend has no hope of finding an attorney who will reduce fees or reduce the retainer. If he can't afford an attorney, he is in the same boat at 99% of divorce clients after the first month. He needs to suck it up and get used to the idea that his primary expense for the next year is supporting a divorce attorney. I can't tell from the facts whether it is a good idea to get a new attorney. If he wants to, the yellow pages are a good place to start. This is not a difficult case or a difficult field. Just interview attorneys, pick one that he likes, pay the retainer. It may be that the present attorney is doing fine and the client is focusing on the wrong things. Here are the priorities he should adopt: Priority one: get through the process to the final decree as quickly as possible. Priority two: custody rights and ...
