Criminal Lawyer Salary

Q.I am curious as to the relative salaries of Barristers and solicitors.......i.e. starting salaries for both, and then average, and then at the top... If anyone can point me to a website or is willing to share knowledge ???

A.There are no simple answers to your question. It depends a lot on the sort of work you do. A criminal lawyer will always appear poor when compared with a commercial lawyer with a similar amount of experience. Barristers do not receive a salary. They charge fees for their services but to consider their fees income would be wrong because they have to take all their (often large) expenses off first before you have a figure valid for comparison with the salary of others. Many people who become barristers have to leave the profession because they simply cannot make enough to live on. I have heard that some make less then the minimum wage for the hours they do. As they are self-employed the minimum wage doesn't apply to them. A very select few make over a million in gross fees and some of these will have a taxable income of over a million. Solicitors incomes also span a very wide range. While few, if any, will make as much as the highest earning barristers a partner in a very large firm can make well over £250k. At the other extreme those who work in small firms doing mainly publicly funded (legal aid) work could make as little as £20k.
