Criminal Defense AttorneyQ.I was recently pulled over for my first DUI offense. My blood alcohol level limit was 0.11 and I cooperated with the officers completely. But, I'm still in a lot of trouble (possible license suspension for a month etc., the usual) and believe me, it's a very intimidating and dreadful experience. Definitely never want to go through this again - I have learnt my lesson. Please help me and send me your opinions (referrals or complaints) on DUI/DWI attorneys in the Bay Area/Northern Calfornia. The attorneys I've talked to charge anywhere from $2000 to $8500 (and that's without going to trial). I've spent a lot of time trying to research feedback on attorneys on the internet but apart from martindale.com (which has some lawyer ratings) I really didn't find anything that was useful or any public consumer websites that address this topic. A.DUI cases are the most common criminal cases, so any criminal law specialist or any lawyer who emphasizes criminal law in his practice will be able to get you started. I say "started," because the "best" lawyer at pretrial motions may not be the best for trial or the best for preserving legal issues for appeal. First offense, you shouldn't be looking at jail time unless it's felony DUI (somebody was injured) or there are aggravating circumstances (e.g. excessive speed, a child in the car, hit-and-run). But you're still looking at roughly $1150 to $3700 in fines and restitution, a 1-year license suspension and 90-day restriction, 3-5 years probation, and 3-12 months mandatory alcohol abuse treatment. These are minimums; don't expect the finest lawyer in California to get you off with less. What happens to your insurance premiums is between you and your carrier, but it will be expensive. Without a lawyer, you will not be well equipped to answer prosecution charges of aggravating circumstances or to present a well-formed case that you should receive only the minimum punishment. Worst case, you're facing six months in jail and a 6-month court suspension on top of the 1-year automatic DMV suspension, in addition to the minimums. You don't want that to happen.
