Expensive vs Inexpensive Criminal Attorney

Q.Expensive vs Inexpensive Criminal Attorney I have been accused of a crime and am looking to hire a lawyer but rates vary dramatically. Are there any drawbacks in getting a lower cost lawyer at first and seeing what he/she can do for me? If I'm dissatisfied, I figure that I can retain someone else to take the case through trial. Any comments or suggestions

A.Sometimes you can get a better rate from a defense attorney who is just starting out. I'm not talking about an amateur. I mean someone who worked a few years at the public defender or DA's office. Someone who has some experience, but is now going solo and working on building a practice. Maybe someone at the local PD's office could steer you in the right direction. Don't bother asking the DA's office. They are not allow to help you find a lawyer. The local (maybe county) bar association can help. Whatever you do, don't do this. I think that this would be a very bad idea. Any criminal lawyer worth his (or her) salt will start planning for trial - and summation in particular - from the moment (s)he accepts the case. Switching drivers mid-stream can result in screwing up what could have been a great strategy. Also, keep in mind that many jurisdictions will not count time you spend finding new counsel against the "speedy trial" clock, thereby reducing your chances of getting an eventual dismissal on those grounds.
