Contract Law

Q.I'm currently studying for a B.Sc.(Hons) in Computing, and I am currently in my third and final year. One of the subjects we have to study is called, "Computing and the Law". Would sound like quite a cushty subject area, until of course the lecturer decides to leave his job! I've got an assignment in which part of the question is "There is no law touching Computing and Multimedia that does not fully have its origins in the Law of Contract". I'm not coming here for answers, but I've spent the best part of the day looking through law books. They are incredibly dry, as dust-covered tomes of knowledge forgotten through the centuries - and I don't understand them at all! I've also been googling to no avail. All I need to know is the basics of what makes up UK Contract Law. References to books or web pages would be really appreciated. I know at the moment that Contract Law entails having an "Offer" and an "Offeree". I know that "Consideration" must be made, and the contract may be cancelled at any time by either party. An exchange of tender may constitute a contract. Can anyone help me build on my 'paragraph of knowledge'?

A.Try www.lawteacher.net (You'll find 'Contract Law'listed under 'Law Subjects' on the left-sided menu). The site's free and contains the course notes from an A-level lecturer - together with case law notes which you'll read in conjunction. Should be just right for you - trouble is with law that most courses are for those training in law and can delve too deep: O-level's too simple for a degree; happily these A-level notes assume no prior knowledge. I'm no lawyer but I think you also need acceptance (start off with offer + acceptance = agreement). These are necessary components for a contract, as is consideration (together with other components that you can read all about in the notes!). I like your assertion that a contract can be cancelled at any time by either party - would you tell that to Sky for me? Tips from my old law lecturer: Answer questions in which you are given hypothetical scenarios in a simple format viz: 1. Facts of the Case (easy - essentially a re-gurge of the question; 2. Principles of Law Involved (identify the area(s) of law at issue eg silence cannot constitute an acceptance); 3. Discussion (application of the Principles of Law to the Facts of the Case); extra brownie points if you support the discussion with case-law ie previously decided cases as much contract law is evolved from precedent - if you can't remember the name of the case then try to identify the case by the facts eg "the case in which a man tried to buy his nephew's horse by saying if he didn't hear from him he'd consider the horse his". No extra points for remembering the date - marks deducted for getting the date wrong! (eeek - I can remember the date of this one - 1840 - but not the name of the case! No wonder I scraped! 4. Advice (ie your conclusion; decide the case and give your reasons - show-off with some obiter dictum!)
