Q.Besides word of mouth, how can one locate a good lawyer in the Chicago area? I live in California, but the state of Illinois has been illegally garnishing my federal refund for an old back child payment action that has settled. Now my credit is thrashed. I saw the Lawyer Referral Service of Chicago Bar Association web site but don't know what area of the law this falls into. Any suggestions for either the category or any lawyer referrals?
A.I just resolved a case like this. My suggestion is to find a local lawyer familiar with the issue. If necessary he may be able to find someone appropriate in Chicago easier than you might. Martindale-Hubbell publishes a legal directory in many volumes. Look for the volume that covers Illinois in your reference or law library. M-H does more than publish the names and addresses of lawyers; it also furnishes ratings of these people. I found the ratings generally reliable; someone rated highly by M-H, in the absence of other knowledge, should be a good choice for you. Obviously, the ratings are not perfect; nothing this side of heaven is.
