Cheap Divorce Lawyers
Q.I am looking for a good divorce lawyer. BTW. I'm selling all my stuff, CHEAP, before she gets her claws on it. Any ideas for me???
A.Better make sure she doesn't know about it. Have you already been served? If so, you are probably restrained from liquidating anything, and doing so could make things harder on you later when it comes down to things of REAL value, like houses and businesses, etc. If you can avoid being represented, you may do better. You can pay a lawyer by the hour to review your documents and decisions, without having them represent you. Often, lawyers will create or encourage strife, which drives up their fees. Also, if your wife already has a lawyer, and she knows you don't, she might not fight as much, because she knows fighting will cost her more than it does you. In Clackamas County (and maybe others), your divorce filing fee pays for some free mediation time, and additional time is avaliable at below-market rates. Once you're both represented, it's more difficult to go to mediation. Mediation costs only about 1/3 of the same amount of lawyer time. Most middle-class employed people will spend more on lawyers in a divorce than they can possibly gain by having a lawyer. Division of most stuff is "statutory," meaning already determined by law. A $60/hr mediator can help you go by the law much cheaper than two $180/hr lawyers can. We spent close $30,000 on lawyers between us. The worst part is, if it hadn't been for the lawyers, we might still be friends.
