Bankruptcy Attorney
Q.All I have are credit card bills. I'm single with no children, no house. I have a car left to pay off but want to keep it off the bankruptcy. I owe the IRS, and I understand that stays off the bankruptcy too. I figure this should be a really simple bankruptcy to process. Is that correct? Any recommendations on an attorney? How much should it cost? Or should I do it myself?
A.It seems to me that you don't NEED to file bankruptcy. Let the credit card loansharks sue you, if they go that far. They may even win and get a judgment against you. BIG DEAL. If you only have one car, and no house, and no wife or kids, there's not much they can do to collect that judgment. The bad credit from the credit card sharks will drop off your credit record in seven years. A bankruptcy stays on for ten, and you must forever afterward reply "yes" when asked if you've ever filed. I am not an attorney. I don't play one on TV. This advice is worth somewhat less than you paid for it, and if you base your decision solely on what you read here, you're insane. I really think you need some professional advice. I have three relatives who have filed bankruptcy, and they all "recovered". Most lawyers will talk to you for free for at least 20 minutes, and a good one can lay out your options in that time. Another thing to do is to talk to the credit card companies, say that you're over your head and your need to restructure your debt or you might have to declare bankruptcy. I have one relative who did that. But you probably should talk to a lawyer.
